The Sino-Russian Conference on Fundamentals and Applications of Precision Metrology, hosted by the School of Physics and Electronic Science and the State Key Laboratory of Precision Spectroscopy Science and Technology, was held at East China Normal University from 25 to 27 November.
The conference focused on the basic scientific research and cutting-edge technological applications of precision metrology, and discussed the latest scientific achievements in precision measurement based on atomic, molecular, ionic and micro-nano systems. More than 40 experts and scholars from China and Russia gave invited presentations and conducted in-depth academic exchanges on the latest progress and development trends of precision measurement and related research directions, and more than 200 people attended the conference online and offline simultaneously.
The opening ceremony of the conference was held at 25 November and was hosted by Wu Haibin, Associate Dean of the School of Physical and Electronic Sciences.
Qian Xuhong, President of the East China Normal University and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, delivered a speech online and welcomed the experts and scholars from China and Russia to the conference. Qian Xuhong said that Russia is one of China's most important partners and the most important participant in the One Belt, One Road project. East China Normal University has a long history of cooperation with Russia and the Soviet Union in the field of education, and has established cooperation with more than 30 Russian universities, and has actively explored academic exchanges, personnel training, scientific research and other aspects. Qian Xuhong pointed out that this conference will certainly promote the in-depth exchange and cooperation between Chinese and Russian experts and scholars in the field of precision metrology, and our university will further promote cooperation with Russian universities in the field of science and education, and further deepen academic exchanges between scientists of the two countries in various fields, so as to contribute to the high-quality development of One Belt, One Road and the well-being of all mankind.
Vadim P. Veiko, Professor at the St. Petersburg State University of Information Technology Mechanics and Optics, gave an online speech in which he used the classic parable of the apple exchange to emphasise the importance of the exchange of academic ideas, hoping that through this conference everyone would gain more new thinking.
Cheng Ya, Dean of the School of Physical and Electronic Sciences online said that precision metrology is a frontier field in physics and is important in strategic applications such as communications and national security. We look forward to learning from each other, exchanging ideas, creating more opportunities for collaboration, and using the power of science to create a better world.
The Deputy Director of the State Heavy Laboratory of Precision Spectroscopy, Mr. Zhang Shian, gave a comprehensive introduction to the laboratory from the aspects of history, faculty strength and research direction.
Over 40 experts and scholars from various universities and research institutes, including the Lebedev Institute of Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow University, St. Petersburg State University of Information Technology Mechanics and Optics, Belarusian State University, Oxford University, Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics, National Center for Timing, Peking University, Fudan University, University of Science and Technology of China, Nanjing University, Shanxi University, etc., gave excellent presentations during the three days.
The scholars at the conference engaged in in-depth exchanges and lively discussions on topics such as atomic/optical clocks, ultracold atoms/molecules, quantum optics, photonic integrated chips and non-linear optics, discussing the cutting-edge developments in the field of precision metrology and the important role of innovative technologies, and sharing important advances on new principles, new technologies and cutting-edge applications.
Precision metrology is an important part of national strategic resources and an important basis for scientific and technological progress and social development, playing a vital role in national security, cutting-edge science and technology, cosmic development, international finance, biomedicine, modern industry and everyday life.
