Charo I. del Genio is a professor at Trakia University in Bulgaria. His research interests include complex networks, computational physics, statistical physics, Monte Carlo simulations, graph theory, mathematical biology, and computational biology.


报告摘要:

The recognition of small molecular ligands by their target receptors is of key relevance for numerous processes in biology. Simple cases, where the binding site is just a shallow indentation on the surface of the protein, are actually quite rare. Mostly, the binding sites are at the bottom of deep pockets that the potential ligand has to traverse in order to reach its destination. As a result, before the actual binding takes place, a large number of atomic and molecular interactions happen that affect the descent in complex ways. Moreover, additional biomolecular partners often play a role downstream, by establishing three-body interactions that depend on the complex interplay of structures across multiple length scales. Taking auxin perception in plants as both a paradigmatic system and one that can be exploited for food security and agropharmacology, I will review some of my results in the biophysical study of such interactions.
